Distenta V White is Sine Qua Non's 2023 white blend, the fifth in the Distenta series that began with the 2019 vintage. SQN's whites are rich, perfumed wines built from several varieties grown on the Krankls' own vineyards.
About This Wine
The Distenta whites draw on Chardonnay, Viognier, Roussanne, Gelber Muskateller and Petit Manseng, with the proportions changing each year. Earlier releases were fermented and aged for close to two years in French puncheons and demi-muids, with lees stirring for texture. 2023 was a long, cool season on the Central Coast after the heat of 2022, and the reds from it are described as fresher and more focused, which suits a white of this weight.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Ripe peach, apricot and citrus oil, with white flowers and a touch of ginger.
- Palate: Full and creamy, with stone fruit, a waxy texture and a thread of fresh acidity.
- Finish: Long and perfumed, with spice and preserved lemon.
Serving & Food
Pull the cork 30 minutes ahead and serve at 11 to 12°C in a Burgundy glass; too cold and the texture closes up. It will drink well for about a decade. Pair with lobster in butter, roast chicken with morels, or crab fried with ginger and spring onion.
How to Enjoy
Drinkers who like full, aromatic white wine, and a white to hold its own at a rich dinner.

About the Winery
Sine Qua Non made its name by never repeating itself: each release had its own name, a label drawn by Manfred Krankl, often from his own linocuts, and sometimes a new bottle shape. In 2021 the winery said it would stop inventing a new name for every wine, since registering fresh names had become too difficult.
The Distenta series is the result. Starting with the 2019 vintage, the Syrah, Grenache and white each carry the Distenta name with a numeral for the release, so the 2023s are Distenta V.
