The 2022 edition of Springbank 21 Year Old, matured only in sherry and port casks and bottled on 27 July 2022 at 46% ABV. With 3,600 bottles, it is a dark, fruit-cake style of the 21.
About This Whisky
Unlike the 2021 release, which included bourbon wood, the 2022 vatting drew on 55% sherry casks and 45% port casks. It was bottled on 27 July 2022 at 46% ABV, without chill filtration or colouring, in a run of 3,600 bottles.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dark berries, fruit cake, ginger and honey, with a leathery note like old library books.
- Palate: Soft and delicate with a coastal edge: salted caramel and sticky toffee pudding, cocoa, gingerbread and red berry cheesecake.
- Finish: Long and smooth, with digestive biscuit and muscovado sugar.
Serving & Food
Pour it into a tulip glass at room temperature and let it open for a few minutes. Water is optional. Good partners are braised beef short rib, fig and walnut bread, or aged Gouda.

About the Distillery
Springbank's stills are the source of its famous two-and-a-half-times distillation. There are three: a wash still heated by a live flame, a low wines still and a spirit still. For Springbank itself, part of the low wines from the first distillation is set aside and blended back in for a further run, so some of the spirit passes through the stills twice and some three times. The same equipment makes Longrow, distilled twice, and Hazelburn, distilled three times. The new make for Springbank comes off at around 71 to 72% ABV.
