Longrow 21 Year Old is the senior age statement in Springbank's peated line, bottled only now and then. For 2022 Springbank drew on three kinds of wood, with sherry casks making up the bulk.
About This Whisky
The 21 Year Old first appeared in 1996 and has been bottled only a handful of times since. This 2022 edition marries 60% ex-sherry, 30% ex-bourbon and 10% ex-Chardonnay casks. Two decades in wood have calmed the peat into a gentle, earthy smoke, leaving plenty of room for mossy, mushroomy and citrus notes. Strength is 46%, with no colouring and no chill filtration.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Damp earth, moss and mushroom, with candied lemon, orange and a faint wisp of peat.
- Palate: Soft and supple, with polished oak, worn leather, wood smoke and a herbal note.
- Finish: Savoury and lingering, with vanilla, sea salt and tart citrus.
Serving & Food
Room temperature, a tulip glass and time: this one changes over half an hour. Add water sparingly, or not at all. Wild mushroom risotto, roast chicken with thyme or a crumbly Lancashire cheese all go well with it.

About the Distillery
Three different malts come off Springbank's stills, and the split starts with distillation. Springbank itself is distilled two and a half times and Hazelburn three times, while Longrow passes through the stills just twice. Fewer passes leave more of the heavy, oily compounds in the spirit, which is where Longrow gets its body. The smoke comes earlier, in the kiln. Springbank dries its barley over peat for anywhere from 30 to 48 hours depending on which malt is being made, and the peat itself is shipped over from Islay.
