Krug was founded in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug and is one of the original Grande Marques of Champagne. Every Krug Champagne is a vintage blend, blended from wines of multiple plots and multiple reserve vintages and aged in oak cellars for at least five years before release. Krug Vintage — labelled by year — is made only when the cellar master judges the wines of that single year worthy of standing on their own. Krug 1998 was released after long cellar ageing and is officially positioned by Krug as a vintage defined by an unusually long, cool growing season that produced balanced, structured wines with strong ageing potential.
