Kongsgaard Winery is a small Napa Valley estate founded by John Kongsgaard, the long-time winemaker at Newton Vineyard and the winemaker behind the first modern California Chardonnay fermented and aged entirely in French oak. The Kongsgaard estate is located in the Carneros region where the cool San Pablo Bay influence shapes the Chardonnay's natural acidity. The flagship Chardonnay — distinct from the 'The Judge' vineyard designate — comes from the estate's older vines and is fermented with native yeasts in French oak, where it also ages on its lees. Kongsgaard wines are allocated through a mailing list and have very limited retail availability.
