Dom Pérignon Rosé 1998 in a 3L jeroboam is the house's pink vintage Champagne in a large bottle for a big table. The 1998 has now had more than two decades to mature, and large formats tend to age more slowly than standard bottles.

About This Champagne

In 1998 a cool summer gave way to a hot, sunny August, which brought good ripeness. When Antonio Galloni reviewed the rosé in 2009 for Wine Advocate he scored it 94 and described sweet candied cherries and spice with firm structure. Josh Raynolds found redcurrant, cherry, dried flowers and smoky minerals, finishing with light grip. With age the fruit has moved towards orange peel, dried cherry and woodsy spice.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Dried cherry, redcurrant and orange peel, with rose petal, spice and a smoky edge.
  • Palate: Medium bodied and well structured, with candied red fruit, poached pear and a fine, gentle mousse.
  • Finish: Long and refined, with a faint grip, floral notes and smoky minerals.

Serving & Food

Chill the jeroboam for several hours in an ice bath, aiming for about 10°C, and pour into white wine glasses. Drink over the next few years. It pairs well with roast suckling pig, duck breast with cherries, or seared tuna.

How to Enjoy

Large gatherings, weddings or a 1998 anniversary where one big bottle can serve the whole table.

About the Maison

Rosé joined the range with the 1959 vintage, and it is declared less often than the white. Only a few hundred bottles of that first 1959 were made, and they were famously served at the 1971 Persepolis celebrations in Iran. The Pinot Noir that gives the rosé its colour and structure comes mainly from Aÿ and Bouzy, where south-facing slopes ripen the grapes fully. Part of that Pinot is vinified as red wine and blended in, so the colour and flavour come from the grapes rather than skin contact alone.
